    About the Book

    Edit

In 45 photographs, displayed in Blurb's new lay-flat binding format, this book explores the continuum between the works of nature and the works of man, emphasizing the patterns and textures in the subjects depicted. It starts with "pure nature"--with subjects that are apparently entirely devoid of any human influence, and progresses to the "pure human"--images of artificial things, completely the result of human activity. Yet even at these extremes this distinction is not always entirely clear, and the images on the intervening pages illustrate some of the ways in which the world we see around us is largely the product of both of these influences.

    David J. Pierson
    Seattle, WA, USA

A lifelong Northwesterner (except for medical training and military service), I retired in 2011 after 35 years on the faculty of the University of Washington, serving as medical director of respiratory care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Ever since college in the 1960s I have been an enthusiastic avocational photographer, particularly attracted to patterns in nature and to subjects that are inherently intriguing or otherwise fascinating. Fortunate to travel extensively in connection with my work, as well as at every opportunity here in the Northwest, I have seldom been without my camera. My extensive photo archive--now digitized--continues to provide me with challenges and enthusiam during retirement. In addition to publishing a number of photography books and illustrated memoirs (several of which are available at Blurb), over the last 25 years I have made annual photo calendars--more than 80 in all--to give as gifts to family, friends, and colleagues.
