    The Cape

I grew in the middle of the sand bar called Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

From early on in my life I have seen the Cape in a direct and simple way, perhaps under the influence of painter Edward Hopper a customer at the family gas station, whose work contains at its core a sense of simplicity and the moment frozen in time.

I began making the images in this book around 1965, after I went off to college and returned to visit or stay with family and friends, continuing over the years until the mid 1970's. Each trip gave cause to revisit places from my early life resulting in a collection of images less a memoir than a look back, trying to understand and make sense of the where that I'm from. These works delve into my memories of a place and the feelings of being alive and young in the sparse, but somehow intimate land and seascape.

The photographs are primarily from the Outer, Cape, that is Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro, and Provincetown.
