About the Book
hedy melvin’s creativity and love for art and design were what ultimately brought her to photography. her love of new york city, its streets and the people on them, and the textures and color
of that life presented a bottomless source of inspiration for her.
her vision was a unique mix, just like her hood, the lower east side. her love for detail, for finding beauty in the unexpected,
and her fearlessness about doing it her way were extraordinary
to behold. this book is hedy’s story, how she looked at the world
and how the world looked back at her…

About the Creator
Rainer Hosch was born in Vienna, Austria. His father, Heinz, was a renowned photojournalist who gave his son his first camera on his 8th birthday. The younger Hosch developed a strong interest in photography, and by high school he decided to turn his passion into a profession, studying his craft at the Graphic Institute in Vienna and UCLA. Based in NYC since 1997, Rainer works internationally for magazines as diverse as Men's Vogue, Wired, Portfolio, LA Weekly, Details, Esquire, GQ, i-D, Flair, Muse, and Interview. His ability to capture both celebrities and unknown subjects in a charismatic and characteristic light have also earned him advertising campaigns for Microsoft, Nike, Hewlett Packard, Pravda, Xbox, and more. Most well-known for his distinctive black-and-white portraits, Rainer is currently enjoying a larger influx of both color and on-location assignments, including reportage and environmental still life.
