    About the Book

    Edit

A daughter of Slovakian immigrants to southwestern Pennsylvania, young Mary Ploskina grew up in the 1920s learning to farm, cut hair, yodel, and dance--skills that not only helped keep the Ploskinas afloat during the Great Depression, but that also sustained her through her long life in Liberty Borough. Together with her husband, Stanley Tokar, Mary owned and operated a beauty and barber shop out of their home and raised three children. She always valued her family, church, heritage, and community, and she modeled kindness, hard work, and playfulness. Our Baba tells the extraordinary tale of an ordinary woman who never moved more than a mile from the house where she was born but who lives in the hearts of her children and grandchildren across the country. This moving tale of love, loss, and the binding ties of faith and family comes packaged in a special edition that includes custom-drawn maps, family photos and documents, and excerpts from Mary's and Stan's diaries.
