    About the Book

    Edit

This book uniquely contains color photographs of all the crew stations on both the lower and upper decks of that most iconic of RAF, RAAF, RNZAF, Norwegian Air Force, South African Air Force and French Navy WWII and post-world-war flying boats, the Short Sunderland. Each photo has a comprehensive caption describing the crewman's equipment and what it was used for. The descriptions were written by the author, Group Captain Derek Empson, MBE, RAF Retired, who also took all the photographs. Derek Empson was himself a Sunderland Mk V navigator from 1952 to 1954, in the Far East and flew sixty-one Sunderland missions over the Yellow Sea and Sea of Japan during the Korean War in support of United Nations Forces. The actual aircraft in the photographs can be seen at the Imperial War Museum at Duxfoird, near Cambridge, England. Gp Capt Derek Empson is also the author of 'Sunderland over Far Eastern Seas' often cited as the most interesting and comprehensive autobiographical account of what it was like to operate Sunderland flying boats. Empson's Blurb photo-book 'Sunderland Mark V' exhibits all the same qualities.

I have now written five books of which three - those describing our travels in the Far East, Australia and New Zealand and the latest about a week's holiday in Norfolk, England - were written and illustrated jointly with my wife, Margaret. On military aviation subjects I have written two books. The Blurb Book is entitled, "Sunderland Mark V". In November 2011, I updated this to its 2nd Edition. It contains 88 photographs taken by me of the exterior and interior including all crew stations and their equipment in Sunderland Mark V ML796, at Duxford Imperial War Museum. This flying boat saw long service with the RAF and many other nations. My photo captions describe the aircraft's and crew's equipment in great detail. My other Military Aviation book, published by Pen & Sword in 2010, is entitled, "Sunderland over Far Eastern Seas", a personal account of flying as Navigator of RAF Sunderland flying boats in the Far East in the 1950s on operations over the Yellow Sea during the Korean
