    Sir William Woods 1786 – 1842

The parentage of Sir William Woods is obscure. It is believed that his pedigree at the College of Arms does not show who his parents were. On the strength of this and of his subsequent friendship with King William IV, there was a story in the family that King William IV was his father. There is no evidence in support of this theory and a good deal against it.

King William IV presented to Sir William Woods on the 2nd September 1835, four silver entrée dishes inscribed “As a mark of his Majesty’s approbation of the assiduity , knowledge and zeal shown by Sir William Woods respecting the various orders belonging to the British Empire’’.
