About the Book
Atlantic Canada has a long and fascinating history with photography, one never fully explored before this book. Prefaced by a comprehensive introduction, and richly illustrated, Early Light traces the progress of photography from 1839, when notice of the first photograph ever made in present-day Canada appeared in print, to the use of wired transmission of photographs of the Moose River mining disaster in the late 1930s, and many highlights in between. The book includes stories about photographers and inventors who pioneered in various aspects of photography, including amateur photography, cinema, and aerial photography. Covering all four Atlantic provinces, and drawing from a wide range of source material, the book opens a window on the region’s rich photographic legacy.

I began The Early Light Project in 2015 to identify and document the photographers of Atlantic Canada in the first 100 years of photography - those who were from here and worked here, those who came here to work if even for a short period of time, and those who left to work elsewhere. Along the way I have gathered much of interest about these photographers and the period in which they worked, and I share my research through my Facebook page and now also with my books. Enjoy! Share in the conversation which this has become!
