    About the Book

    Edit

Decaying Missouri by Joseph Stamburski presents a view of the changes occurring in eastern Missouri as the demand for housing and retail space intensifies. Amid the rapid growth occurring along the I-70 corridor, some areas are left to suffer the ravages of decline and deterioration, irrevocably changing the communities left in the wake of this rapid development. Each photograph documents not only the material reality of buildings but also what those buildings represent: continuity with the past, architectural distinctiveness, and community identity shaped by place. This photobook creates a visual record of the transformation, helping to preserve what may soon perish completely and be left unremembered in our collective memory.

    Joseph Stamburski
    Warrenton, MO

Joseph G. Stamburski is a photographer whose work documents the structural forces reshaping eastern Missouri counties along the I-70 corridor. He specifically explores the gentrification, displacement, and architectural loss accompanying rapid housing and retail development. Joseph brings distinctive qualifications to this subject matter through forty years of continuous residence in Warren County, Missouri, positioned within the region's most dynamic growth zone. His perspective combines deep personal knowledge of place-based transformation with analytical distance—he has witnessed decades of regional change while maintaining the critical awareness necessary for meaningful artistic engagement. Joseph's background includes military service as a Hospital Corpsman with the U.S. Navy and with the United States Marine Corps Fleet Marine Force, as well as an extended career in retail work within his community. Joseph is currently based in Warrenton, Missouri.
