A metà degli anni '20, New York adottò lo stile Art Déco, nato a Parigi con l'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes del 1925, da cui prende il nome. Questo stile, caratterizzato da forme geometriche, materiali lussuosi e audaci ornamenti, divenne prominente nell'architettura della città, in particolare nei suoi iconici grattacieli. Rompendo con molte convenzioni architettoniche tradizionali e caratterizzato da verticalità, ornamenti e materiali da costruzione come plastica, metallo e terracotta, l’Art Déco si ritrova in edifici governativi, progetti commerciali e residenziali in tutti e cinque i distretti della città.
