About the Book
The Seventh Bardo features 43 black and white photographs from Beth Lilly’s photographic series of the same title. Lilly spent ten years driving and photographing landscapes and people on the US interstate for a series she describes as a meditation on the modern journey. While a monumental feat of engineering, the structure of the interstate system has the unintended consequence of isolating drivers from the unrelenting demands on our attention. Interstates transformed journeys from an exploration out into the unknown to a rare opportunity for solitude and introspection. In addition to the intimate portraits and haunting landscapes, the book features a project statement by Beth Lilly and essays by former Center for Documentary Studies director Alexa Dilworth and Soto Zen teacher Ben Connelly. This edition is an exact replica of the limited edition (24), hand-made accordion artist book made by Lilly except for a slight change to overall dimensions and of course, this edition is not an accordion style book. Blurb layout by Kaneesha Brownlee.
