    About the Book

    Edit

Drawing from historical texts, witch trial records, and early woodblock illustrations, De Lamiis et Indumentis Diaboli explores the intersection of witchcraft, clothing, and patriarchal control. This book, filled with hauntingly intricate woodblock prints, examines how fashion and early imagery was used to both condemn and empower women; from the persecuted figures of the witch hunts to the contemporary reclamation of witch-like aesthetics as an act of resistance. Through darkly evocative imagery and critical research, Ryan Wilde reinterprets the historical narrative, transforming symbols of fear into statements of defiance, sexuality, and power. A visual and intellectual incantation, this book honors the resilience of those who dared to stand apart.

    Ryan Wilde
    New York, NY, USA

Ryan Wilde is a multidisciplinary artist and writer who examines the intersections of gender, identity, and clothing. With a background in millinery, Wilde’s practice combines technical craftsmanship with feminist theory and material culture. Her sculptures and essays critique the objectification of women and the cultural narratives embedded in clothing, drawing on influences from Simone de Beauvoir to object-oriented ontology. Wilde’s writing explores the fetishization of uniforms and the reclamation of sartorial symbols. Her visual work has been exhibited internationally at various galleries and museums. Through her art and writing, Wilde investigates how material culture shapes identity and power, offering nuanced perspectives on how clothing influences personal and societal narratives.
