    About the Book

    Edit

A trained French chef, Michel Garbay wanted to travel before settling into a career stirring sauces and searing steaks. A trip to Canada somehow led him on an entirely different path as a commercial deep-sea diver, working in international waters.

From his early days in southwestern France to the Vancouver restaurant scene of the 1960s, Michel's story unfolds just as innovations in underwater technology begin to radically change the diving industry. With lighthearted humour he chronicles his first job in the Mediterranean; navigating the Sicilian Mafia with one of Cousteau’s dive teams; and taking part in Joe MacInnis' Arctic expedition to document the wreck of the Breadalbane. Later he would become a supervisor of Phil Nuytten's most advanced submersible of its time before capping it all off as a diving safety specialist for the offshore oil industry.

Michel’s story takes us around the globe with a brotherhood of self-proclaimed reprobates. This treasury of entertaining anecdotes spanning six decades will leave you wanting "one more sea story."
