    About the Book

    Edit

2022: Bill van Haaren shares memories of his childhood during the last years of the Dutch East Indies, through his imprisonment in a Japanese concentration camp in World War II, in the War for Indonesian Independence, and into the repatriation to the Netherlands and settling in America. Beyond the story of a boy who survived remarkable trauma and hardship is the story of a boy who grew up into a gentle man, carrying each experience with him, calling upon them for strength, guidance, and even comfort, and sharing them, in both words and pictures, with people he loves as well as strangers, whenever he gets the chance.
